| DESCRIPTION | Medium, deep close coiled basket, in bowl form, with steep walls and flat base. Walls decorated with six evenly spaced vertical frets or meander lines, executed in Martynia sp. Open rectangular portions of frets are graduated with the largest located closest to the rim. Base is undecorated. Plain stitched rim has a large degree of weft loss. Stitches made of very pale brown plant fibers; coil foundations composed of bundles of very pale brown split plant material. The bowl form of basket is common among the Tohono O'odham (Tanner 1983:35). The fret is found as a decorative element in all basketry techniques, and can be arranged horizontally or vertically (Tanner 1983:43). Not all of this basket's materials have been identified, however Tanner indicates that the Tohono O'odham use yucca, devil's claw (Martynia sp.), and willow (Salix sp.) in their basketry (1983:19-20). |
