Michel Goldwater (1821-1903) Michel Goldwater (1821-1903) Unknown Goldwater family "Big Mike," Barry's grandfather, fled Russia for France to avoid police reprisals and conscription after becoming involved with underground Jewish dissidents. He later sailed for England where he married Sarah Nathan.

2. Sarah Nathan Goldwater (1825-1905) Sarah Nathan Goldwater (1825-1905) Unknown Goldwater family Sarah was a the daughter of a wealthy London furrier. Sarah took over the fur-processing factory after her father died. A talented dress-maker, she taught herself to read but never learned to write.

3. Joseph Goldwater (1830-1889) Joseph Goldwater (1830-1889) Unknown Goldwater family It was Joseph who encouraged his brother Michel to sail to America and enter the dry goods business. They arrived in San Francisco in 1852 to begin their joint venture that would take them to Mexico and Arizona.

4. Manuela Arviza Goldwater (1828-1928) Manuela Arviza Goldwater (1828-1928) Unknown Goldwater family Manuela Arviza, lifelong resident of Nogales, was Joseph Goldwater's second wife. She lived to be 99 years old.

5. Morris Goldwater (1852-1939) Morris Goldwater (1852-1939) Unknown Goldwater, Morris, 1852-1939 Barry Goldwater adored his Uncle Morris who was very active in the civic, social and economic life of Prescott and the Territory of Arizona. Among his many accomplishments, Morris founded the first telegraph office in Phoenix, served as Mayor of Prescott, served in the Order of Masons, and was Vice President of the Arizona Constitutional Convention.

6. Sarah Fisher Goldwater (1859-1934) Sarah Fisher Goldwater (1859-1934) Unknown Goldwater family Known as Aunt Sallie, wife of Morris, she was the daughter of a pioneering family who came to the Prescott area from Missouri. She was a widow who ran a boarding house. She and Morris married late in life.

7. Early Bisbee Arizona Early Bisbee Arizona Unknown Arizona--History; Cities and towns Site of "The Bisbee Massacre" December 8, 1883 at the Castenada and Goldwater Store run by Joe Goldwater. During the store robbery, three men and a pregnant woman were killed.

8. Original Goldwater Store Original Goldwater Store Unknown Goldwater family; Chain stores Built in 1869 of adobe in Ehrenberg, Arizona. Joseph Goldwater was the first postmaster there. This town, located on the Colorado River, no longer exists.

15. Hattie Josephine Williams (1875-1966) Hattie Josephine Williams (1875-1966) Unknown Goldwater family Barry Goldwater's mother in her early years boarding a train. She was born in Illinois, grew up in Nebraska, trained as a nurse, and arrived in Phoenix in 1903 with the diagnosis of tuberculosis. Known for her independence and venturesome spirit, "Jo" set the tone and expectations for her children.
